Argument
Genre Definition:
Argumentative texts are a common form of writing style. This type of text presents a main claim and supports it with proof or evidence which is found through research. Oftentimes in argumentative texts, there are two or more sides that can be argued. Argumentative texts cover current events issues and can easily be used to discuss social studies concepts.
Classroom Use
Reading Activity: As your students read an argumentative text, have them question it. Ask questions like what is the author claiming? What evidence does the author provide to support his/her claim?
Writing Activity: First, have students pick a topic or issue in current events. Then have them research the topic and write their own argumentative paper describing the side that they support. Also introduce the use of the counterclaim and how it can be beneficial to address the counterclaim and provide solutions for it within their own paper. The following graphic organizer is a great tool for students during their brainstorming and research process.
Selection Process
In order to select quality argumentative texts to use with elementary students, it's important that the book provides both sides of the argument clearly. Argumentative texts also tend to use more academic vocabulary, so paying attention to the language that is used within the text is another important aspect to look at. Accuracy of the text is another quality to look into. The information provided within the book should be unbiased and true.
